Because 8 days do not divide into the 7-day week, the blocks drift across weekdays: a team works some weekends and is fully off on others, so weekend duty evens out over time rather than belonging to anyone permanently.

The Panama schedule — also written 2-2-3 — is a 14-day cycle of 12-hour shifts: 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off. Each team works 7 of every 14 days and never more than three in a row. The version this generator produces is an 8-day cycle: 2 mornings, 2 afternoons, 2 nights, then 2 days off — always rotating forward from morning to afternoon to night. With four teams offset by two days each, every calendar day has exactly one team on each of the three shifts and one team resting: seamless 24/7 coverage.

Each cycle contains 6 workdays of 8 hours — 48 hours per 8 days, again an average of 42 hours per week. Shifts are shorter than in 12-hour patterns and no team is stuck on nights: only two consecutive night shifts before the rest days arrive, and the forward direction of rotation is the one most shift-work ergonomics guidance favours.

Think about fatigue and handovers first. Twelve-hour patterns (4 on / 4 off, Panama) mean fewer workdays and only two handovers per day, at the price of longer shifts; continental keeps every shift at 8 hours and rotates fast, but adds a third daily handover. Whichever you pick, cap consecutive nights and protect the rest block that follows them.

Then weigh weekend fairness and team count. Panama alternates full 3-day weekends by design; 4 on / 4 off spreads weekends through calendar drift; continental gives shorter but more frequent breaks.
